| Lombard astronaut longs for a sushi bar, Chicago-style pizza in space
If his astronaut gig doesn't work out, Lombard's Dan Tani said he can always get a job as a hot dog taster. In a quirky interview Thursday based on questions submitted by Daily Herald readers, Tani relaxed a little bit and joked around about some of his experiences over the past three months in space. Yes, he wants to get home. His expected eight-week tour turned into a three-month stay with a hazy return date, and was marred by the tragic death of his mother, Rose. .

The Brewers bullpen seems to be improved on paper. Doug Melvin spent a lot of time on that in the offseason signing Riske, Mota, Torres, and the biggest name signing of Gagne. I trust Doug Melvin, I really do, but that doesn't mean that these signings don't make me a little twitchy. All of these guys with the exception of Riske are coming off of seasons that weren't their best. They can't afford the nice house in good condition, so they go for the same size house that is in forclosure down the block. They get it, get in there, and see what the previous owners left and how much work they have to do to it to get it back into a condition they can live with. So far they have had a pretty good track record with their "house flipping ventures." I have my reservations that it will last right now. According to a jsonline.com article, it almost seems like the fact that they didn't have good years last year is what made them so enticing to Melvin.

City Hall credibility wrinkling our noses
The $450-million waterfront baseball stadium in St. Petersburg might be dead already. But if it isn't, its credibility suffered a deadly blow last week at the hands of the City Council. Most likely, the city will still go through the motions. But in the end, the decision will be up to the voters. The trouble is that the voters will have to believe that what the city is telling them is, uh, true. Which is a problem these days. To paraphrase Hamlet and a bunch of other guys through the ages, after this past week, I smell a rat - but it might not be the same rat you smell. So, let's compare rats. Let's say the stadium doesn't happen. What happens then to the waterfront site, now occupied by Progress Energy Park and Al Lang Field? The future of that site was much on the minds of residents during public hearings last year.
LIFELONG IMPRESSIONS - THE ART OF MILEIN COSMAN AT THE AUSTRIAN ...
Now in her eighties, Cosman is funny, and describes visual detail with passion. But shes not analytical. Theres no message, she says, I just want to do good drawing. For the generation that came over from Hitlers Germany, it was not always the done thing to make much of your Jewish identity. An example is artist Marie-Louise von Motesiczky, a close friend of Cosmans whose portrait is included in the exhibition. As a child in Austria, Von Motesiczky did not find out she was Jewish until a maid told her. .
Under the Hood With Knight Rider 2.0: Trans Am vs. Ford Mustang ...
Ford may be paying dearly to have one of their worst cars that they offer become a house hold name with the children that watch this revised tv series, but I for one think it is a horrible joke. I won't watch a single episode. It was a G.M. vehicle in the beginning and it should stay a G.M. vehicle today. They plan on using computer animation for basically every screen shot of the mustang in motion, but only because they cannot risk going beyond episode production deadlines due to the fact that this mustang obviously won't run correctly at any given moment. The factory recalls DO NOT LIE! So, since this is the case and knowing that the camaro nor trans-am are not in production as of yet, why not use computer animation showing at least the new camaro as K.I.T.T.??? But I guess money talks, so Ford actually got their way.
VIDEO: County commission asks judge to shut down sports bar
Collier County is headed to court to try to shut down a Stevie Tomato's sports bar in a North Naples shopping center. County commissioners voted 4-1 on Tuesday to file a lawsuit against the popular hangout, which has been at the center of a controversy about discrepancies between the zoning document for the shopping center at Immokalee Road and Collier Boulevard and a 2002 vote by commissioners. Noise complaints from neighbors in the Pebblebrooke subdivision next to the shopping center — some of whom live close enough to watch the goings-on at Stevie Tomato's outdoor bar from their lanais — led to an internal investigation into the discrepancies, one involving the sale of alcohol at the shopping center. A half-dozen Pebblebrooke residents urged commissioners to take action Tuesday, not only to shut down the sports bar, but to correct another discrepancy in the zoning document that allowed the shopping center's subsequent owner to build up to two stories overlooking Pebblebrooke backyards.
Utilities face carbon-use limits
South Carolina's utilities warn many state residents will be left in the dark if some congressional proposals designed to reduce carbon-dioxide pollution from coal-fired plants ever see the light of day. During an information meeting with the S.C. Public Service Commission on Wednesday, officials representing the state's largest utilities and power cooperatives said nuclear power is the best long-term option for making sure the lights stay on statewide. The utilities' presentation will help the commission develop a strategy to deal with the impending changes, chairman G. O'Neal Hamilton said. Commission members did not say publicly whether they support or oppose building more nuclear plants, but stressed they want to make sure residents and industry would be able to continue getting affordable power.
Fired teacher sues Manatee district
Cropsey was cleared of charges she tampered with her students' Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, a crime under Florida law. When asked to participate in an interview with school district investigators, Cropsey refused because her attorney would not be allowed to attend with her. The school board then fired her for insubordination. Cropsey, who now teaches at a charter school, has a pending case appealing the school board's decision in the Second District Court of Appeal. School board attorney John Bowen said Cropsey's lawsuit is groundless. "She hasn't been denied any rights. We are aware of her entire situation," Bowen said Tuesday. "She had a full and fair hearing before the school board and her employment was terminated.
