| El Duque, Mets react to Fidel Castro's resignation as Cuban president
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. The televisions in the Mets' clubhouse were on Tuesday morning as they always are before practice. Only this time they weren't tuned to basketball dunks or steroid testimony. Pedro Martinez and others watched the news of Fidel Castro's resignation as Cuba's president. Many of the Mets' Latin American players weren't shy with an opinion. Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon even envisioned an avenue of growth. However, the person most affected by the news had nothing to say. "I don't know what's going on down there," said pitcher Orlando Hernandez, who fled the country in 1998 to play for the Yankees. Hernandez still has family in the country and has previously declined comment, citing their safety. He once said he used to listen to the Yankees on the radio and dreamed of playing in the United States.

PORTLAND, Maine, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Barack Obama Sunday appeared to be heading to a weekend sweep of Democratic presidential nominating contests over rival Hillary Clinton. The senator from Illinois was leading his colleague from New York 58 percent to 42 percent, with 59 percent of the state's caucuses reporting, the Portland Press Herald reported. Despite a snow storm, more than 27,000 Maine Democrats made their way to caucuses. About 17,000 Maine Democrats caucused in 2004, the newspaper said. "I'm surprised the turnout is this high," said Arden Manning, executive director of the Maine Democratic party. The high turnout was causing long delays in some areas and final results were not expected until 11 p.m. EST. Obama and Clinton are running a close race in the campaign for the Democratic nomination.
It's kids vs. 'big' kids in video bowling tourney
Evan Welsh is only 7 but he's already ranked as a "pro" bowler. "I've bowled a perfect game," he'll tell you proudly. But, the Bethel Park youngster doesn't lift a heavy bowling ball. He uses a remote control to win games, earning "pro" status in virtual bowling on his Nintendo Wii game system. Tomorrow night Evan and 35 other classmates from Lincoln Elementary School in the Bethel Park School District will team up with their grandparents to compete in a Wii bowling tournament. The event was organized by school librarian Denice Pazuchanics in conjunction with the library as a way to encourage interaction between generations. Ms. Pazuchanics also said that it's important for students to build a relationship with the library as a lifelong resource.
Plenty of achievements amid sins
There are some fair criticisms that Groves should cop it, but for a guy who has been one of this country's great small business success stories, he shouldn't be pilloried for enjoying the consequences of his hard work. Before looking at the sins he deserves a bagging for, let's recap on his achievements. Before this share-market shellacking, there would have been thousands of up-and-coming business owners who would have been inspired to greater things by reading Groves' story. And when business owners go on to greater things, it usually means jobs and wages for others. It means more taxes for governments to spend and when they grow overseas, as Groves has, it also means valuable export income that this company sorely requires. This South African-born Brisbane boy started out as a bank clerk in Brisbane.
Looking for new running shoes? Hit the Rogue, Jack
Rogue Equipment opened at 500 San Marcos St. this month, and Hill Country Running Company is due to open in March at 215 S. Lamar Blvd. Both stores are headed by folks with plenty of experience in the Austin fitness community. Ruth England and Steve Sisson of Rogue Training Systems, which puts 3,000 athletes a year through 50 different training programs, teamed with Craig Staley and Stephanie Terrell of Bettysport, that cool women's fitness shop at 916 W. 12th St. (and now also in the Domain), to open the new Rogue running store just east of Interstate 35. Rogue will still offer training programs but now adds retail to the mix. "The timing just seemed right for a new shop," Staley says. "Austin is the only city of its size or larger without multiple running retailers, so the need has been there for some time." The shop, around the corner from Progress Coffee, is near the future site of a commuter-rail station and close to the Lance Armstrong Bikeway.
Indian on death row in Pak to be reunited with family tomorrow
Singh's wife Paramjit Kaur, who has been struggling for his release since his arrest and subsequent conviction on espionage charges, will greet him on the Indian side of the border with family members and friends. The Ansar Burney Trust, one of Pakistan's most prominent rights organisations, is now working for the release of other Indian nationals in Pakistani prisons, particularly fishermen. Fahad Burney said the Trust was searching for Indian prisoners of war in Pakistani jails. "We are also working for the release of Pakistani nationals from Indian jails," he said. Singh was traced by Ansar Burney during a visit to Lahore's Central Jail as part of his work for prisoners' rights and jail reforms. A mercy petition sent by the minister was accepted by Musharraf, who pardoned Singh and allowed him to return to India.

The Army sniper who allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife in a Cheyenne bar was transported to Ivinson Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead on Tuesday with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. David Munis, 36, was pronounced dead at 8:01 p.m. Tuesday at Ivinson Memorial Hospital. Albany County Sheriffs Office spokesman Michael Garcia said it appeared Munis had shot himself with a high-powered rifle in a remote trailer northwest of Laramie and about eight miles from where investigators had found his truck in Rogers Canyon. Acccording to Garcia, an anonymous source who was out riding on horseback on Tuesday called dispatch from a cell phone at 7 p.m., saying he had spotted a man fitting Munis description standing outside of the camper. At the time of the call, Garcia said teams were still searching around the Rogers Canyon area.

Hossa's, Richards' different debuts
It wasn't the coming-out party Marian Hossa or his new club was looking for. Not only did the Penguins offense look all out of sorts in the first half of Thursday night's 5-1 loss to the Bruins, but Hossa also was forced out of the game after accidentally going knee on knee with Glen Murray. The prognosis isn't too devastating: A first degree MCL sprain. Translation? Hossa will be out about a week -- just in time to pair up with Sidney Crosby when he returns. Crosby was originally due back earlier, but the Penguins chose not to rush things. Before Hossa's knee crumpled, coach Michel Therrien was shuffling more than your average blackjack dealer. Lines were seemingly thrown together with reckless abandon, and nothing worked. Sure, chemistry can't always be fostered instantly, but breaking up the trio of Evgeni Malkin, Ryan Malone and Petr Sykora appeared to be a wretched error nonetheless.
Why I’m Still Not for Hillary Clinton
One goes to bed with the feeling that the next six weeks will include a national opportunity for all but the far right to take apart questions of race, gender, class and political integrity. In a way, it is the first 21st century election. Will Obama force Clinton into the new millennium? Can she meet my expectations? Then her record enters my consciousness: her votes on Iraq, the Patriot Act and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. I wonder if I am, as antifeminists are constantly taunting, one of those women who is jealous of other women? Am I harder on women than on men? After all, the first qualified woman who becomes president is not likely to be everything a feminist would like her to be. Am I just not practical enough to hold my nose and go with a qualified woman? Clinton is to be respected for her intelligence, knowledge of the issues and consistent work for social justice.
