Colonoscopy story hits home for many viewers

When I was wheeled into my colonoscopy exam, I was concerned something abnormal or even cancerous would be discovered. But there was no other way to find out. This important procedure can save your life, and I want to be around a few more years for my children and my loved ones.Starting at the age of 50, your risk of getting colon cancer increases and a colonoscopy can catch problems before they get worse. I was sedated, so it was easy and painless. Dr. William Robertson performed the procedure. It took 18 minutes to examine the entire colon with a scope that had a tiny camera at its tip. It is pretty amazing stuff, and the best part I was clean and healthy"Your risk of ever developing a colon cancer is very, very small. Much lower than the six percent average because, at 52, you had a normal colonoscopy.

Valley public radio station leaders threaten to cut services

Home values advanced on a curve never before seen. This led to market speculation which caused demand to go up much higher than should have. Another factor was the subprime mortgages being sold as securities. Some subprime borrowers should have never qualified for loans. Easy mortgages also caused home values to rise because of higher demand. Rising home values led to home equity loans which led to excessive spending. Now comes the bill for all the partying. Everybody is talking recession, we will be lucky to avoid an all out depression. Home values are starting to fall with no end in sight. People will not start buying until home values hit bottom. This will cause buyers to have the attitude, I will wait until the price comes down more. I have already heard this line and heard it from more than one person.

As Navy targets Gates County for OLF, residents raise concerns

AT THEIR FAMILY farm in the Gates County Sandbanks area, Elaine Herring and her sister Linda Warren, both wearing sweat shirts with "No OLF" on them, walked along a ditch bank thick with willow trees.

Warren stopped at one tree and bent a tiny bare limb over for a closer look. Attached by a piece of silk was a tightly curled leaf she recognized as the winter shelter of a viceroy butterfly caterpillar.

The sisters have planted more than 6,000 cedar trees for winter bird cover, berry trees for wildlife and willow trees for butterflies.

"The people in Raleigh looked at a map and said, 'Let's go here,' " she said. "They don't really know what's here."

Residents of the Sandbanks area are looking for whatever will best defeat the Navy's proposal to build a jet practice airfield near their homes, whether it be butterflies or barbecue.

Is indecency running rampant in our shopping malls?

Imagine that you're out with your teenage children and suddenly see a young woman walking nearby, completely topless except for one strategically-placed hand. Or some guys and girls run by, and one has clearly had his pants and underwear completely off - he's pulling them up, but you can see most of his backside. Or perhaps a half-dozen good-looking women strut by in nothing but underwear and high heels.

Many observers would be irritated or shocked; some might even be angry enough at the young woman to report her for indecent exposure. But while these incidents would violate any local statute for indecency or partial public nudity, most of us would probably shrug them off as a momentary or isolated incidents.

So why do we shrug it off when retailers take those same images, blow them up larger than life, and put them in hundreds of malls and teenage clothing stores around the country? The pictures currently in the windows of Abercrombie & Fitch and Victoria's Secret contain the exact images described above, and would violate public indecency standards in person.

The fight over Net neutrality and you

The Net neutrality battle is coming back to Congress and there are real-world reasons why the average Internet user ought to care about the issue.

Net neutrality, essentially, is the principle that users should have unfettered and equal Internet access.

Simple enough. Who would be against that? But when you strip away the half-truths, it becomes another chapter in the battle between telecom behemoths, such as AT&T and Comcast, and online giants such as Google and Amazon.

Both have interests in wanting to shape the Internet's future, and they may not jibe with your interests.

At issue is whether and how the owners of the Internet "pipes" can manage traffic. The Internet service providers want to manage flow at peak hours, and the online content providers and merchants want no such manipulation of their traffic.

Mourners pay candlelight tribute to seven young N.B. basketball ...

BATHURST, N.B. - The seven high school basketball players killed last weekend in a highway accident in northern New Brunswick were remembered Wednesday as loving sons, sweet brothers and trusted friends who will be loved forever in their heartbroken hometown.

The funeral for all seven boys brought the city of Bathurst to a standstill as schools and businesses closed and about 5,500 people crowded into a hockey arena and an adjacent rink to hear the service.

"You have lost your precious sons," Bathurst Mayor Stephen Brunet told the families of the boys.

"We have lost seven future leaders. For a moment just imagine in your mind what they could have done."

The boys' coffins lay side by side at one end of the arena, covered with sprays of flowers.

Ex-Philly news anchor's charges reduced

A former Philadelphia TV news anchor accused of hitting a New York police officer left court a free woman Monday after a judge said she will dismiss newly reduced charges if the defendant behaves for six months.

Charges against Alycia Lane, 35, were downgraded to misdemeanors after prosecutors said scratches on the female officer's face weren't serious enough to warrant felony assault charges.

Lane's lawyer David S. Smith denied she hit the officer early Dec. 16.

A police complaint said she put a video camera in the face of another officer as he tried to put a drunk person in a taxicab. When the female officer intervened, Lane identified herself as a reporter and cursed at her, the complaint said.

Lane then hit her in the face, causing two lacerations and swelling, according to the complaint.
