Unethical practices led to mortgage crisis

I've seen babies and children in Wal-Mart and Nordstrom stores with tattoos on their little arms). However, so far the U.S. courts don't see this practice as child abuse. Amazing, isn't it?Gary MyersOceansideBillions over Baghdad is bankrupting U.S.
The Iraq war and our present economic woes are intricately connected. The law of cause and effect has thrown our country into a recession. Pouring $495 billion into this illegal war has caused our mounting economic woes. Spending $338 million a day on an unending war that should never have been started causes hardships on millions of us in all phases of our economic pursuits. We Americans know that we are supporting this atrocious war on our backs, and the burden has become more than we can bear. This war must be stopped and the spending stopped before our country is bankrupt!Jerry and JudiCunninghamVistaA good way to fight childhood obesity

June 2006

Ante up the cost of three or four kids and the sum gives new meaning to the term: mid life crisis.

There is no relief in sight for the next generation. With the outlay of a college education expected to increase at five percent a year, the average annual cost of a private college in 15 years is pegged at $51,664. Factor five percent a year to the already nose bleed cost of sending a child to Harvard, MIT, Boston College or Boston University, and you’re bracing for an annual expense of $90,000 by 2017.

"(Higher) education is at a crisis point, the result of uncontrolled cost increases over the past 20 years that have greatly exceeded the rate of inflation or annual consumer price indexes," the Houston Chronicle observes in an editorial. "Tuition forces parents to pull all-nighters, too," adds Paul Daugherty in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Bush pushes for more NATO troops in Afghanistan

Bush's appeal was the latest in a U.S. drive to persuade reluctant NATO allies to take on a larger role in combating a resurgent Taliban and their al Qaeda allies in the most volatile parts of the country.

U.S. officials are disappointed at the meager results of their pressure campaign so far and warn that NATO's credibility could be at stake. The issue is expected to figure prominently at NATO's April 2-4 summit in Bucharest.

"I am going to go to Bucharest with the notion that we're thankful for the contributions being made and encourage people to contribute more," Bush said at a joint news conference with Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen at the president's Texas ranch.

Bush stopped short of naming the allies he believes should commit more troops while acknowledging "certain political constraints on certain countries."

But he insisted, "My administration has made it abundantly clear we expect people to carry a heavy burden if they're going to be ...

Say It Ain’t So, Ralph!

I had mixed feelings when some friends of mine pointed out that Ralph Nader had mentioned me as an "independent military analyst" in his Sunday appearance on NBC's Meet the Press. In responding to a question from Tim Russert about why he was running yet again, he cited a recent article of mine about how Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have not only ignored the Pentagon's record spending spree, but have adopted policies that may well involve increasing the military budget.

My point was that we need to get the Democratic frontrunners to address this issue in some fashion before they take office in 2009 (assuming a Democrat wins, which is not guaranteed by any means). It was NOT meant to suggest that we need a third party candidate in the race — although obviously Ralph Nader is free to use the information as he sees fit.
