Windfall of 16pc for armed forces

KUALA LUMPUR: Armed Forces staff have every reason to rejoice after the government announced a 16 per cent annual dividend and bonus payout from the Armed Forces Superannuation Fund (LTAT) yesterday.

The payout comprises seven per cent dividend, three per cent bonus and a further six per cent in special bonuses.

The quantum is the highest in 11 years and the second highest since the fund was set up, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said.

The eagerly awaited announcement meant that more than 120,000 contributors would be receiving their share of the total RM552.2 million payout very soon.

The highest payout, totalling RM697.6 million, was in 1996. The LTAT was established in August 1972.
Last year, the dividend rate was 15 per cent, with a total payout of RM471.6 million.

Ken Schram: Another way to enshrine Dave Niehaus

He's been selected as the 2008 recipient of the Ford C. Frick award for excellence in baseball broadcasting. He'll be inducted at Cooperstown on the 27th of July. The way I figure it, that gives the Mariners 5 full months to order up the necessary number of ceramic likenesses and have them available for, say, the weekend home series against Baltimore. That'd be the first weekend in August. To be honest, I don't think this is an idea that has to be sold, just suggested. To that end, I think if we all emailed the Mariners and asked them to do this I believe they'd understand how much it would be appreciated by the fans. (You can e-mail the Mariners here)For 31 seasons, Dave Niehaus has been through the thick and thin of Northwest baseball and he's brought us along with him.Way to go Dave, way to go.Have something to say to Ken? E-mail him at kenschram@komo4news.com.And be sure to join Ken, along with John Carlson, on "The Commentators", which airs every weekday from 3-6 p.m.

Haverhill High opens first Teen Center

HAVERHILL — It was hardly the kind of scene you'd expect to see at school.

Music was pounding as teenagers danced. Some played video games on a big-screen television. Others chatted while relaxing on comfortable living room furniture that sat on wall-to-wall carpeting.

The location: a former storage room in the lower level of Haverhill High School.

It is now an after-school teen center offering students creative outlets, help with schoolwork and simply just a place to relax.

Several years in the making, the center is now open to students for several hours each weekday afternoon. It offers homework help, Internet-connected computers, musical instruments — such as an electric piano, a Nintendo video game console connected to a plasma television, a dance floor, comfortable furniture for relaxation and conversation, art supplies for students who like to draw, and a sound system for mixing, recording and playing music.

Child workers’ main concern is food

Two more boys in the same age group work in the canteen adjoining the security room here. The canteen in the deluxe building of the Estate Office also has under-14 boys serving tea and eatables. The number of those covered under the law runs into hundreds because it is common sight to see children in the age group of under-14 working in dhabas, restaurants, eateries, hotels, motels, teashops, resorts and other recreational centres. These are excluding children working in the residential quarters all over the city.

Mrs Amar Kulwant, a councillor of the Municipal Corporation said: Food is no excuse for exploiting small children. Look at the type of labour these small children are exposed to behind the closed doors in houses. I have personally intervened in cases of physical and mental torture.
