No More Wildcatters - No More Inferno

I have a story online about this with some more details, but here are the nuts and bolts.

ECHL Board of Governors met Jan. 23 in Stockton, Calif. At that time, the Board gave Texas and Columbia a three-week extension to try and complete leases to stay in their respective towns.

Both teams failed. Last Friday, there was a Board of Governors conference call. Texas and Columbia asked for more time. The Board said no.

So Texas moves to Ontario, Calif., under new ownership, and Columbia gets a year-long suspension. The Wildcatters couldn't get a deal to renew their lease at Ford Arena, nor could they find a new arena to play in -- despite an agreement by local resident Sharon Terrell to buy the team next year.

The Inferno, who play at the University of South Carolina's Columbia Coliseum, will take a yearlong suspension while they attempt to build a new arena in Lexington County, S.C.

B-schools may soon lose monopoly over strategic management lessons

KOLKATA: He is a professor and a gentleman. In a career spanning over two decades with leading companies and top B-schools including IIM Calcutta (IIM-C), he has taught and consulted top corporates on strategic management. But Ranjan Das is now about to change course.

He plans to take the concept of strategic management out of the elitist confines of B-schools into every corner of the country. On a sabbatical from IIM-C since November 2007, he has set up The Strategy Academy (TSA) — a first-of-its-kind initiative.

“All I can say is I have dared to dream. This is an experiment, which is close to my heart and I would like to devote two-to-three years on this. I am ready to put my own money into this venture. I have invested my own funds, including PF money into this," Mr Das told ET.

"Desperate Housewives" star Teri Hatcher has spoken out about her unlikely friendship with former U.S. President George Bush, boasting she's even stayed at the statesman's Maine home.

Photos of the actress giving Bush a kiss on the cheek were splashed over newspapers last week, arousing huge curiosity.

But Hatcher explains she's been pals with the ex-president for years after voicing support for a number of his humanitarian campaigns.

She says, "He's wonderful to my family. I hope to be involved in many of his charities."

Rendell and his quick tongue return to the national spotlight.

In Sunday's Washington Post Rendell told columnist David Broder that with a 10 or 11-point lead over Sen. Barack Obama there was "no way [Clinton] would lose" in Pennsylvania.

But a day after polls showed Clinton's lead had shrunk to six points, Rendell toned down his prediction, telling the Inquirer on Thursday that if she wins Texas and Ohio he was "confident" she would win in Pennsylvania adding

"It is a very good state for her demographically and there is tremendous good will in the southeast for her because of what the president (Bill Clinton) and she did for us," he said.

Requests for appearances spiked two weeks ago when Rendell found himself the target of unwanted attention over a remark about race and politics.

Rendell drew widespread criticism when he commented that a percentage of conservative Pennsylvanians would probably not vote for Sen.

Three weeks until it begins anew

It's been a while since the Braves had the potential to get 45-50 wins and 600 or more innings from a starting trio, but that's what they expect from John Smoltz, Tim Hudson and Tom Glavine.

If they get that kind of work from them, they believe the bullpen can thrive and the rest of the rotation can fall in line and work without undue pressure, whoever is in those last two starting spots.

I saw that ESPN's Buster Olney in his blog listed a key question or two about every NL team, and for the Braves he asked: Can John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Mike Hampton take the ball for 85-90 starts? Can Rafael Soriano stay healthy?

I agree with Buster on the importance of Soriano staying healthy. Because while the Braves believe Peter Moylan might be able to handle the closing duties in an emergency, or that Mike Gonzalez should be back sometime around the All-Star break, no way do they want to lean on an inexperienced closer or one coming back from Tommy John surgery (Gonzalez) during the heat of a pennant race.
