Attorneys attack deputy's credibility in explosives case

A federal judge must now decide whether the actions and racist banter of South Carolina deputies are enough to dismiss crucial evidence being used against two Egyptian students arrested with explosives material.

Attorneys spent two days meticulously picking apart the Aug. 4 traffic stop that resulted in the arrest of Youssef Samir Megahed and Ahmed Abdellatif Sherif Mohamed near Charleston.

Both deputies who stopped and searched the pair's car acknowledged they made racist statements about the pair - equating them to the Taliban and joking about them being suicide bombers.

Defense attorneys argued the deputies acted improperly and lacked probable cause to detain the pair and search their vehicle. They said bullets and loosely packed explosive material seized during the stop should be ruled inadmissible during trial.

With Fido, don't be afraid to be on the go

For instance, my cat yowls piteously at high volume from the moment she's put (unwillingly) in her travel carrier. If she's not in a travel carrier, she is quiet but tries to wedge herself under the driver pedals, which has made for interesting drives in the past.

If you are going on a road trip and own a pet that can adapt to that temporary change in lifestyle, you will need to do some additional pre-trip planning.

Check with hotels, motels and campgrounds along your route in advance to see if they accommodate pets. If they do, find out if there is an additional fee and, if you are planning to go sight-seeing or do activities in places a pet can't go, ask if you must house your pet in a crate when you are away from the hotel room.

If you are going to visit friends or family, make sure they know your pet is coming and are comfortable receiving the four-legged guest.

Losing weight together

When her mom suffered a debilitating stroke after the heart surgery, Linda knew she had to do something. She didn't want to suffer the same fate.

Larry also had struggled with his weight all his life, going up and down like a yo-yo, 100 or more pounds at a time, every few years.

So they decided to lose weight together, and after 3 1/2 years, they've dropped a combined 142 pounds.

They now fit into "regular size" clothes, and no one recognizes them at weddings, Linda reports. Larry competes with people half his age in the martial arts. And they finally both fit comfortably on Larry's Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Their combined weight loss has had such an impact on their lives that they've been selected among the regional winners in the Weight Watchers' Inspiring Stories of the Year contest.

1968 Year of Rage

President Lyndon Baines Johnson of Texas, who had succeeded to the office upon the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, was the target of serious protest from students and derision from fellow politicians on both sides of the aisle. Johnson knew, as proved by later released telephone and other transcripts, that the war was lost, yet he poured thousands of American troops into that Southeast Asian country. Eventually, more than 58,000 Americans died in Vietnam.
