Unearthing Rock’s Next Generation

It seems that despite a complete absence of local product distribution, radio and video airplay and no local press coverage whatsoever, Unearth has established a presence in Egypt that even the members of the group were unaware of until recently. The fact is, though, that a clerk at CityStars’s Virgin Megastore claimed that the store had fielded numerous requests for Unearth CDs in recent months and was currently ordering new stock.

He went on to explain that it was much the same story with most heavy metal groups: “They are not on TV or radio, but people are constantly coming in, asking for things that we have never heard of.”

In Tahrir Square, I spotted a teenager wearing an Unearth t-shirt and asked him where he had heard of the group. He said, not surprisingly, “online.” He unexpectedly began to rattle off song titles, the names of band members, the group’s official website address and suggested back catalog titles to look for “before the new one, In the Eyes of Fire, comes out.”

He also implored me to write something about what he saw as “the greatest band in the world.” Such an encounter with a complete stranger demanded further investigation, and as Unearth wasn’t likely to come to Egypt any time soon, Egypt Today went to Unearth.

So with the Presidential election heating up and MLB Spring Training games scheduled to start in less than three weeks, the timing couldn't be better.

Notable names in the "Presidential Predictor" set include, from the Democratic side, Barack Obama and John Edwards; and from the Republicans: John McCain, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. A few other surprise candidates and political personalities are also showcased in the collection including Al Gore being tagged out by reigning U.S. President George W. Bush in a funny portrayal of Yankee second baseman Chuck Knoblauch's phantom tag of Boston's Jose Offerman during the '99 American League Championship Series.

Other parodies include John McCain and Ted Williams, a pair of decorated war veterans who served their country proudly; John Edwards' portrayal of Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, both healthcare advocates, the latter who appeared as a right fielder in a single MLB game for the New York Giants (June 29, 1905); Fred Thompson blending with Babe Ruth, two larger-than-life characters who have appeared on the silver screen; and Rudy Giuliani as overzealous Yankee fan Jeffrey Maier whose infamous eighth-inning catch of Derek Jeter's long fly ball in Game 1 of the 1996 ALCS tied the score, 4-4, before the Yankees went on to win the pennant and their first World Series title since 1978.

The Legacy of Bush II

They are quite candid about it, even acknowledging their mean spirit in accomplishing it. Their leading strategist in Washington - the same Grover Norquist – has famously said he wants to shrink the government down to the size that it could be drowned in a bathtub. More recently, in commenting on the fiscal crisis in the states and its affect on schools and poor people, Norquist said, "I hope one of them" – one of the states – "goes bankrupt." So much for compassionate conservatism. But at least Norquist says what he means and means what he says. The White House pursues the same homicidal dream without saying so. Instead of shrinking down the government, they're filling the bathtub with so much debt that it floods the house, water-logs the economy, and washes away services for decades that have lifted millions of Americans out of destitution and into the middle-class.

Best Answers to Sunday Question ...

But should a person who is high profile in a certain segment of our population be ignored when he commits such an act? Or has suicide become so common place that it has lost its stigma? I was tempted to publish a short report about the suicide here. What do you think? Let folks find out through the grapevine. Or stonewall the unexpected death? (With that, I'm headed for the couch because the pain meds are kicking in. Miss you guys today. I'll be back later.)

Wal-Mart unleashes employees in blogs

Microsoft is one of Wal-Mart's biggest suppliers. But that did not stop the Wal-Mart employee in charge of buying computers from panning Microsoft's newest operating system, Vista.

"My life has not changed dramatically" because of the new system, he wrote on his blog. "Well, for that matter, it hasn't changed at all."

His public burst of candor was not isolated. On the same blog, a video game buyer for Wal-Mart slammed a "Star Wars" film as a "debacle," even though Wal-Mart still sells the movie.

Known for its strict, by-the-books culture - accepting a cup of coffee from a supplier can be a firing offense - Wal-Mart is now encouraging employees who do the buying to speak frankly, even critically, about the products the chain carries.

An unusual new Web site by Wal-Mart, which was quietly created during the holiday shopping season, has become a forum for unvarnished rants about gadgets, raves about new video games and advice on selecting environmentally sustainable food.

Wounded Nation

The need for sincere spiritual interactions to give balance cannot be ignored; both go hand in hand. Guns barking, dead bodies, hold-ups, and so on, are all manifestations of violence, but its origin takes place in the mind, the thought process. Therefore, the mind must be purified of such malicious thoughts for the preservation of human life and dignity. We bring to mind the words of 'Abdu'l-Bah, son of Baha'u'llah, the prophet-founder of the Bah' faith, who said: "There is nothing so heartbreaking and terrible as an outburst of human savagery! I charge you all that each one of you concentrate all the thoughts of your heart on love and unity. When a thought of war comes, oppose it by a stronger thought of peace. A thought of hatred must be destroyed by a more powerful thought of love. Thoughts of war bring destruction to all harmony, well-being, restfulness and content.

Corpas locked, loaded Rockie

TUCSON — Manny Corpas' knack for perfect endings has created the beginning of a long-term relationship with the Rockies. The Rockies agreed in principle Wednesday on a four-year deal with two club option years with Corpas, The Denver Post learned, continuing a trend of locking up their core young players.

In a deal first reported by The Denver Post, Corpas, 25, will receive more than $8 million in guaranteed money, with the possibility of earning $22 million if both the options are exercised in his last year of arbitration and first year of free agency in 2013.

It represents a landmark deal, the longest the Rockies have ever given a relief pitcher.

Baseball has no precedent for a closer with less than two years' experience .

UW takes advantage at the line

It wasn't long ago that free throws were an item on the Wyoming Cowboys' laundry list of problems. But after a 26-of-27 day from the line led to a 72-64 win over Utah in Laramie on Saturday, free-throw shooting is one quandary that can be considered fixed."We work on it a lot," UW coach Heath Schroyer said after the Cowboys' second consecutive win. "We shoot them every day for 15 minutes or so."And I think the guys are starting to value how important they are."UW senior forward Joseph Taylor echoed that sentiment and pointed to one game where he found out the hard way just how important free throws can be.Taylor was just 1-for-6 from the charity stripe in the Pokes' first meeting with Air Force, a costly overtime loss at home in which the team made just 13 of 22 attempts."I missed that shot at Air Force," he said.
